Background:  Diesel engine idling is a cost that negatively impacts every
user of diesel power, on or off-highway.  The average heavy-duty truck, for example,
consumes 0.8 gallons of fuel an hour while idling, based on EPA testing. 

Every day in the United States, almost half a million long-haul trucks are on
the road, and most spend part of each day idling. Long-haul trucks idle 500 to
3,500 hours a year, burning a half gallon to one and a half gallons of diesel fuel
an hour.  According to the Department of Energy, this consumes up to a billion
gallons of diesel fuel a year. The Environmental Protection Agency calculates
that diesel engine idling also spews 11 million tons of carbon dioxide, 200,000 tons
of oxides of nitrogen and 5,000 tons of particulate matter into the air annually.

Trucking companies used to absorb the cost of diesel engine idling, including paying
fines of up to $22,500. But now, state and local regulators have implemented stringent limits
on engine idling. ATRI (American Transportation Research Institute) has published a
compendium of idling regulations, updated in October, 2008.. 

The ST-550 Service Tracker helps managers identify and reduce diesel engine idling time,
and make jobsites immediately more profitable.  Eliminating fuel wasted by diesel engine
idling is a major benefit, but reducing engine idle time also lengthens the service life of
transmissions and engines, reduces carbon build-up, and extends the life of oil and
oil filters. The ST-550 can contribute substantially to the success of company-wide
environmental initiatives.

.  Data is captured passively by
“drive-by”.  Low power radio frequency transmits data 100+ yards.  When used
with the companion PDA handheld computer, your foreman can also capture
dispensed fuel data crew hours and maintenance schedules and stop fuel theft. 
Seven equipment alarms on the ST-550 help keep preventative maintenance
on schedule, and avoid over or under-servicing.   

The ST-550 is a powerful tool that can also provide management with the
analytics for understanding what service tasks take the longest, what equipment
breaks down most often, and other useful metrics.  Its reporting feature updates
management information nightly, and automatically generates data for OSHA
and DOT inspections and warranty claims.

ST-900 Cellular Service Tracker

Cellular Technology Adapts GPS Capabilities  to Needs of Rental Companies

OEM Data Delivery has introduced the ST-900 Cellular
Service Tracker.  This versatile, scaleable system
is ideal for precisely tracking equipment activity at
remote locations.  Data generated includes cumulative
machine hours, equipment location, idle vs. work logs
and odometer readings. 

The system also generates custom service alerts,
so management can schedule maintenance when
it’s most advantageous and over-servicing is avoided. 
It can be used in conjunction with a Fuel Tracker
option to track, in real time, the dispensing of fuel
and other consumables into individual equipment
or vehicles.  It has proved to be a valuable tool for
preventing the theft, or unauthorized use, of fuel and equipment.  Perhaps most importantly,
