tracking cranes, lifts, booms, and other high-value assets while substantially increasing
staff productivity.

OEM’s rental asset management system was co-developed with a major rigging
and crane rental company. Equipment and technology (wireless, radio, RFID, cellular)
is customized to the needs of the individual rental firm. Here’s our newest product for

Cellular Technology Adapts GPS Capabilities  to Needs of Rental Companies

OEM DD has introduced the ST-900 Cellular
Service Tracker.  This versatile, scaleable system
is ideal for precisely tracking equipment activity at
remote locations.  Data generated includes cumulative
machine hours, equipment location, idling vs. work
logs and odometer readings. 

The system also generates custom service alerts,
so management can schedule maintenance when
it’s most advantageous (and least disruptive) and
over-servicing is avoided.  It can be used in conjunction
with a Fuel Tracker option to track, in real time, the
dispensing of fuel and other consumables into
individual equipment or vehicles.  It has proved to
be a valuable tool for preventing the theft, or
unauthorized use, of fuel and equipment. 

The ST-900 was engineered for severe service, and is a valuable tool for both asset
allocation between multiple sites, and for job costing. OEM DD’s ST-900 Service Tracker
works wirelessly, paperlessly and “hands-free.”  Management reports are generated
nightly and information can be uploaded into virtually any back office system. It is a
major time-saver for generating regulatory documents, particularly fuel tax refunds
for off-highway use. 

Systems are custom-engineered to user requirements and can be implemented quickly;
training typically requires just a few hours.  The ST-900 is based on rugged jobsite
technology developed by OEM DD and used by major rental firms and others who
operate multiple, complex jobsites.

Case Study: Rental Asset Management for a Major
Rigging and Crane Rental Company

Management needed detailed, accurate data for planning, budgeting and productivity
analysis.   On the other side, the yard staff needed rugged, fast and portable data
collection technology.  The goals for both were to:

  1. Centrally (and positively) locate all assets
  2. Put loads and trailers under dispatch control
  3. Identify the disposition of all assets (on rent, down, allocated)
  4. Identify which components are with a particular unit
  5. Improve staff productivity by reducing data collection time, and
    by reducing manual searching and equipment ID in the yard

Rental Asset Management System Overview

There were 3 categories of assets:

  • Units - cranes (850) AWP (1500) and forklifts (500)
  • Components – unit attachments and major parts (3000+)
  • Parts – inventory parts (1000+)

Units and components have unique asset numbers, while parts do not.

The OEMDD Rental Asset Management System includes a barcode scanner/PDA,
Crane Rental Launch Pad software, a JobPOD, and web reports. 

At the start of the day, the yard foreman brings the scanner into the yard.

The shipping process:

  • Load the items
  • Scan the items on the trailer

The receiving/inventory process:

  • Scan the items on the trailer
  • Unload the items

During breaks and at the end of the day, data is unloaded to the JobPOD, 
an advanced internet appliance that automatically downloads, encrypts, and
transmits PDA data to the OEM DataVault.   

DataVault is a centralized, internet-accessible repository where JobPOD
users can read and analyze field data through a library of web-based reports. 
This managed reporting system allows planning and decision-making to be
more accurate than ever before possible  Print-ready reports can be deployed
across LANs and WANs, and to mobile users.

achieved all of its objectives:

  • Scanner and software perform as designed.
  • Management and dispatching reliably receive reports on-demand.
  • Assets can be allocated for best return on investment, and inventory
    discrepancies can be addressed immediately.
  • Service can be scheduled with the least-possible disruption.
  • The rental company realized an 80% increase in staff productivity
    thanks to lean, automated data collection.
  • A 40% increase in worker productivity was realized by eliminating
    the tedious task of manually searching the yard.
